In a North American exclusive, QSD now carries the world’s first healthcare curtain that actively kills pathogens: the Endurocide® Antimicrobial, Sporicidal & Virucidal Hybrid Hospital Curtain

What is an Endurocide® curtain?

QSD has the answer for you! Endurocide® curtains are the world’s first antimicrobial and sporicidal disposable hospital curtains. These disposable curtains have been tested and have shown to remain sporicidal, antimicrobial and virucidal for up to 2 years in situ*. QSD’s Endurocide disposable curtains trap and kill pathogens on the surface of the curtain to help reduce hospital acquired infections. QSD has ensured that these disposable curtains are tested to international standards against spores, bacteria, fungi, mycrobacteria and enveloped viruses.

So now, why are Endurocide® Antimicrobial & Sporicidal curtains needed?

Traditional polyester curtains or the standard polypropylene curtains that haven’t been treated with an antimicrobial agent can quickly and quite easily become a source of pathogenic transmission. Meaning they hold onto bacteria that could potentially cause an illness. Endurocide® is the solution. 92% of traditional curtains become contaminated again with infections within 1 week. 93% of laundered fabric on traditional curtains contained bacteria that could result in healthcare associated infections. C.difficile spores & MRSA can survive on surfaces in excess of 5 months. With Endurocide® these are no longer a concern. These disposable curtains can significantly reduce the risk of hospital acquired infections being transferred via curtains by care workers, patients and visitors. QSD Endurocide® curtains are impregnated with a patented liquid formulation that will both trap and kill pathogens on the surface of the disposable curtain, helping to prevent the fabric from becoming a source of transmission.

So then, how is this done?

Let’s start the chain of infection.

  1. A hand touches a contaminated surface and picks up pathogens.
  2. Contaminated hand then touches an Endurocide® Antimicrobial & Sporicidal Disposable Curtain – pathogens may be transferred to the curtain surface.
  3. The Endurocide® disposable curtain is Sporistatic (sporistatic refers to biocides that inhibit the growth of fungi sand spores) pathogens are trapped and unable to escape.
  4. The Endurocide® disposable curtain is also sporicidal – the pathogens are killed.
  5. Chain of infection is then broken – the Endurocide® disposable curtain prevents potential retransmission of pathogens to other people or surfaces effectively breaking the chain.

The dual mechanism of trapping and killing the infectious pathogens is key. QSD Endurocide® disposable curtain fabric traps the pathogens on the surface, preventing them from being picked up when the curtain is touched. Then the pathogens are trapped. The Endurocide® disposable curtains kill pathogens, prevent them from multiplying and remove risk to others who may use the disposable curtains. The ability of our Endurocide® Antimicrobial & Sporicidal Curtains to both trap & kill pathogens on the surface is what makes them so unique and essential in healthcare settings.

How do Endurocide Antimicrobial & Sporicidal Hospital Curtains Work?

  1. Endurocide® Antimicrobial & Sporicidal Hospital Curtains kill spores by piercing through their spore-coats and cortex and then causing lethal DNA damage to the spore.
  2. Endurocide® Antimicrobial & Sporicidal Hospital Curtains kill bacteria by first preventing their respiration, then disrupting their cell metabolism and then inhibiting the cell from reproducing.

How can a QSD Endurocide® Antimicrobial and Sporicidal hospital curtains help to reduce the spread of HIAs?

Studies have shown that up to 40% of HAIs can be attributed to the cross infection from the hands of health care personnel, who are contaminated either by direct contact with a patient or indirectly by touching contaminated surfaces. It has also been shown that contaminated hands can transfer viruses to 5 more surfaces or 14 other subjects. On top of this, pathogens can survive on surfaces for long periods of time, with C.difficile spores and MRSA being shown to survive on surfaces for up to 5 months and 7 months respectively.

What about the QSD Endurocide® hospital curtain?

What procedures are there to minimize its potential for contamination? If a health care worker touches a contaminated surface and picks up the contamination, then touches a hospital curtain, they have the potential to contaminate the hospital curtain.  With some hospital curtains remaining in-situ for anywhere between one day to six months, these hospital curtains have the potential to become sources of transmission of infections for anyone who comes into contact with them. However Endurocide® Antimicrobial & Sporicidal Hospital Curtains have changed this! By being tested and proven to kill spores, bacteria and fungi, Endurocide® Antimicrobial & Sporicidal Hospital Curtains offer an effective barrier to pathogens and help hospitals maintain their hand and surface hygiene protocols – by minimizing the potential for the hospital curtain to become a source of infection!

How quickly do QSD Endurocide® Antimicrobial and Sporicidal Hospital curtains start working?

QSD Endurocide® Antimicrobial & Sporicidal Hospital Curtains are ready to work as soon as you take them out of the box and have been independently tested and shown to kill pathogens in seconds.

Cleaning QSD Endurocide® Antimicrobial & Sporicidal Hospital Curtains

It is not advised to clean any of our curtains by any mechanical means – disposable curtains are designed to be replaced when visibly soiled. Regarding QSD Endurocide® Antimicrobial & Sporicidal Curtains, wiping or cleaning them may affect the performance of the patented sporicidal formulation coated onto the curtain surface. The curtains are designed to kill pathogens in situ and do not require any cleaning to improve function.  When any of our curtains become visibly soiled, they should always be replaced.

Are Endurocide® Antimicrobial, Sporicidal & Virucidal Curtains effective against Coronavirus?

Coronavirus is an enveloped virus of the family Coronavidae. Enveloped viruses can be highly infectious but are not particularly difficult to kill and as such are susceptible to a broad range of disinfectants.

Our Antimicrobial, Sporicidal & Virucidal Curtains have not, at time of writing, been tested against Coronavirus. However, the biocide used to treat the curtains has been tested to international standard EN 14476 and proven to be effective against:

  • H1N1 Influenza A Virus (Swine Flu):  >99.999% kill rate in 5 minutes
  • Measles morbillivirus: >99.99% kill rate in 5 minutes

Both H1N1 Swine Flu and Measles are enveloped viruses – like the Coronavirus – and the biocidal action of the curtain treatment liquid damages the virus’s cell by puncturing its envelope, causing it to leak and rendering the virus unable to replicate. Once a virus is unable to replicate, it cannot spread and so is no longer a threat.

It is generally accepted that if a product is proven to be active against one enveloped virus there is a high probability that the product will be able to kill similar viruses. As both H1N1 Swine Flu and Measles are enveloped viruses with a similar biological structure to Coronavirus, the biocidal action of Endurocide® Antimicrobial, Sporicidal & Virucidal Curtains is likely to work in a similar way against Coronavirus and therefore be effective against it. However, at time of writing, we are not able to make any definitive statements as it has not yet been laboratory tested.

Furthermore, Endurocide® Sporicidal Curtain Liquid works by coating the fabric with a biostatic polymer layer, which traps bacteria and viruses on the fabric, both preventing them from multiplying and killing them. Endurocide® Antimicrobial, Sporicidal & Virucidal Curtains have been extensively tested against a wide range of pathogens and shown to be effective for up to 2 years.

DISCLAIMER: The information provided above does not constitute a guarantee or warranty that Endurocide® Antimicrobial & Sporicidal Curtains are effective against Coronavirus and is given only as guidance based on existing available information.

*Actual length of curtain use will depend on individual hospital practices and the risk of the curtain being soiled from items such as blood, urine and general spills. Curtains should be replaced when visibly soiled.  Timescales are given as guidelines only.

Not all hospital curtains are the same.

Traditional curtains should be changed four times a year, but labour and budgets being what they are, many facilities cannot maintain this schedule, and even if they did 92% of curtains in healthcare settings become contaminated within one week of being re-hung. Long before they appear soiled, they’re potential causes of healthcare-associated infections (HAIs) in staff, patients and visitors.

Unlike traditional, untreated curtains which can store pathogens, our curtains are treated with a patented formulation that traps and kills bacteria, mycobacteria, fungi and spores on the fabric surface, helping to prevent your curtains from becoming a source of pathogenic transmission for up to two years. Laundering and labour costs disappear with Endurocide® disposable curtains.
